See “Teacher Says Charter School Fired Her for Organizing to Improve Pay Scale” on the New York Times website.
In May, Nichole Byrne Lau received an evaluation saying that her students at the Williamsburg Charter High School were “lucky to have you as their teacher.” This month, she was fired.

Just looked at my grades for the last quarter. I gave a total of 4869 grades in that time. With about 160 students, that is about 30 graded assignments for each kid over the course of the 43 days. With 99.9% accuracy, I could have screwed up five kids’ grades.
We’ll see if they ever get [...]
My two kids love trains. So my wife and I took them to The Jackson Street Roundhouse in St. Paul, which is part of the MN Transportation Museum. We didn’t tell the kids where we were going to make it a surprise. My daughter immediately guesses that we are going to the Children’s Museum, which [...]

Take the kids at school who probably shouldn’t graduate. It doesn’t matter why….excessive absences, laziness, apathy, and watch them walk across the stage. I suppose high school “graduation” will be the crowning achievement in their academic lives, but why must so many of them make a spectacle of themselves?
Valedictorians and salutatorians don’t have to….why should [...]
I just found out that I’m going to have a 6th (last) hour preperation period next year.
Me ≠ Happy
Noting is worse than teaching five hours straight, minus a short lunch, and then having an hour to plan ahead, grade papers, etc.. After five hours of teaching, I’m totally spent and can’t concentrate. I’ve had that [...]
I had a parent email me about his kid last week. He’s missed lots of days due to baseball since I have him the last hour of the day, and the team must leave to board busses before my class. So he’s doing terrible.
Anyhow, the parent asks:
We would rather not see him have a D [...]
A student of mine was talking to her sister (another one of mine) in the hallway between classes. She told her that their mother was in the building. Apparently, one sister may have lost the other’s “Whiteface”, which is what they call their jackets. Mom was looking for the jacket. (Why she would bother is [...]
I have a policy in my classes that if you skip class, you cannot make up the work done that day. I’m sure lots of people have this policy….why not? It isn’t exactly outlandish, is it?
Today was “finals” day for seniors since we have to turn their grades in early (graduation is before the last [...]
A girl in my geometry class asked me if she could have some extra credit. I didn’t go the “why would I give you extra credit if you can’t do the regular credit” line that I usually give. I just asked he why she thought she needed it. She said that it was because her [...]
